A seven-minute stereoscopic 360° documentary about Lake Baikal’s winter landscape, communities and spiritual traditions.
Lake Baikal: The Science and Spirituality of Extreme Water was an early stereoscopic 360-degree documentary developed when cinematic VR was still establishing its production and festival language.
Documentary landscape in 360 degrees
The project introduced audiences to the dramatic winter landscape around the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake, together with the spiritual traditions and communities shaped by it.
Native stereoscopic production
The film used a stereoscopic 360 workflow rather than converting a conventional frame. Location, camera position and the relationship between foreground and distant landscape therefore had to be planned around embodied viewing.
A long international tour
The project travelled through documentary markets, VR showcases, film festivals, fulldome programmes and Google Expeditions. Its circulation connected the emerging VR field with established documentary institutions.
