A premium documentary series revisiting the Yeltsin decade through archive, testimony and the lived contradictions of post-Soviet Russia.

Yeltsin. The Ultimate Battle is a three-part documentary within the Nineties series about the 1996 Russian presidential election, one of the country’s most competitive and consequential media campaigns.

01

A political campaign as media history

Six months before the election, Boris Yeltsin’s approval stood far behind Communist Party candidate Gennady Zyuganov. The series follows how media, political consultants and economic power were mobilised around Yeltsin’s campaign.

02

Archive, testimony and competing memory

The production worked with a large body of interviews, personal archive and contemporary recordings. The three-episode form allowed conflicting professional and ethical perspectives to remain visible.

03

Direction and production

Georgy Molodtsov worked as producer and co-director with Dilia Alishina. The project formed part of his 2020 to 2022 work on premium documentary series and films for streaming platforms.
